K-WILL Addresses Industry-Wide Lip Sync Measurement Issues With QuMax-2000
Torrance, CA — February 21, 2007 — K-WILL Corporation has responded to industry concerns over lack of quality lip sync technology by enhancing the QuMax-2000, its video and audio quality monitoring device for high and standard definition. The QuMax-2000 automatically detects video and audio errors in real time, now including lip sync.
Although several areas in a transmission chain are susceptible to lip sync issues, solutions have been scarce in the marketplace. This issue has been so prevalent that SMPTE has a special committee to address it (S22-Lip Sync Evaluation Committee).
Now, by utilizing frame-based technology, broadcasters can detect lip sync measurement errors by comparing the original outbound signal with what is being received at different points along the transmission chain — allowing several lip sync measurements to see where the audio and video start to drift from each other. K-WILL’s QuMax-2000 can tell how far off lip sync has drifted, down to the frame level. With room for up to 12 input boards, several samples can be taken.
Of special importance, broadcasters maintain quality because QuMax’s real-time lip sync measurement does not inject potentially corrupting markers. Having this clean process leaves the original undisturbed and also allows for other video quality measurements such as freeze frames, blackouts, and slice errors to be made along with lip sync evaluation.
